Volunteer Opportunities

Assistant Artist Facilitator

In collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts, the YMCA of Greater Westfield offers the National Alzheimer's Association program "Memories in the Making." This program is a unique approach to art expression for dementia patients. The "Memories Method" provides Alzheimer's patients with a means of self-expression through art. Through the "Memories" program, it has been found that persons with diminished verbal and organizational skills can still communicate through creating a drawing or picture. The goal of the "Memories Method" is the process of creating.

The program takes place every Friday from 10:00AM - 11:30AM at the Mercy Adult Day Center in Westfield. We are seeking an individual who has an art background, a genuine feeling of closeness to the elderly and who has an understanding of dementia of the Alzheimer's type or who is willing to obtain some training, free of charge. This position would be an assistant position. We currently have a Master Artist Facilitator who leads the program. (Begins in September)

Individuals interest in the position should contact Rosann Scalise, Operations Director at 568-8631 ext. 302 or rscalise@westfieldymca.org
